Book Review: The Adventures of Walter Weta and Flutter the Fantail, by Angie Dennis

Angie Dennis has been painting professionally since 2002. She lives in Auckland with her husband and two children. In 2013, she published her first children’s book Aotearoa to Zespri – the New Zealand Alphabet.
This story was inspired by a memorable campervan holiday with her husband and parents when they first moved to New Zealand in 1998. They fell in love with New Zealand with its beautiful and diverse scenery and warm-hearted people.
Flutter the Fantail was feeling quite cross,
Her mate Walter Weta was a bit of a loss.
They had started an adventure to Timbuktu,
But Walter had dropped the map down the loo!
Anybody that has travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand knows all about long drops – you just wouldn’t want to fish a map out of there!
What I found so endearing about this book was how Angie includes some of New Zealand’s more memorable tourist attractions. The pair travel the country, starting in Cape Reinga, racing down the sloped at Mt Ruapehu, then stopping for hot soup (a very Kiwi thing to do), before taking the Interislander ferry. They travel down to Kaikoura through to the mountains and ski fields, where the adventures continue.
This is a stunning book with wonderful illustrations. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the campervan they traveled in was a VW, this being one of New Zealand’s more iconic forms of travelling in earlier times. My granddaughter wanted to know what a Weta was, but I couldn’t find one to show her. It was great to see such a positive personification of this prehistoric creature that is mainly known for scaring the living daylights out of people.
